Q
How much does it cost?
AA home generator system with installation starts around $3,900; however, the average cost of a whole house generator with installation is closer to $5,700.
Q
How long can my generator run?
ANatural gas / propane-based generators are able to run for weeks or more, although if the generator is left to run for more than 24 continuous hours, it is recommended to stop the unit and check the oil level. If the generator is run for more than 100 hours total since its last oil change, it is best that a technician performs routine maintenance, as outlined in your owner’s manual. This includes a fresh infusion of oil and oil filter.

Diesel engines could, theoretically, run for longer periods of time, provided the diesel tanks are large enough to support the running time. Fuel should not be allowed to run out completely, as this could cause minor problems upon start up.

Q
Natural Gas vs. Diesel?
ANatural gas / propane is a cleaner, preferred option when it comes to residential or small commercial needs. For larger applications, diesel units are ideal because of the efficiency and availability of larger engines.
Q
What is the yearly maintenance cost?
AThe cost of maintaining your unit depends on your choice of service program and what specific service is required. Residential maintenance can be as little as $95 plus necessary parts for minor servicing, or marginally more for a full maintenance cycle. Travel is included up to 15 miles from our location – inquire if you are located out of zone.
Q
How will I know if my generator is working properly while I’m away?
AUntil just a few years ago, the only way to monitor your generator remotely was to ask a neighbor or nearby individual to listen for the motor, or have a technician inspect your unit on days of reported power outages in your area.

Fortunately, technology has evolved, with some Internet-connectable equipment allowing you to monitor your generator through your cell phone or other devices.

Q
How big of a generator do I need?
AThis question is often asked prior to purchase, and our trained experts will be best able to assist you with your purchase. After a free consultation and survey of your home or business, our installer will talk with you about your requirements and subsequent options, offering up a quote at that time.
Q
Can I run part of my house on the generator, or do I need to power my entire home?
ABoth are options, depending on your need.

With a smaller generator, you can select which essential items to power, such as your furnace, sump pump, refrigerator, emergency lighting, septic system, or garage door.

That said, running power to the entire house may be closer in price than you may think. Our expert installers will be happy to assist you with an assessment of need.

Q
What is a Transfer Switch?
AAn automatic transfer switch is a device that senses when utility power flowing to your home is interrupted and automatically manages your home’s transition to backup power.
National Electrical Code requires a device like this if two types of power (Utility Power and backup generator power) are going to feed the house.
Q
What is the life of a generator?
ADepending on how well you maintain the generator, and the amount of use, a generator can last up to 20 years or more.
